Acts 2:42-47

Tonight I read Acts 2:42-47,

42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. 44 And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; 45 and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. 46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.

In reading these verses, several things jumped out at me, making me stop and ponder their significance:

  1. During this time the early church was successful and growing in numbers because the people were continually devoting themselves to the teachings, fellowship, and prayer. (Verse 42)
  2. During this time the early church was successful and growing in numbers because they did not loose their “sense of awe”.  They held on to that feeling of closeness with God rather than letting that wonderful feeling that God, in His power and majesty, had saved them and was performing wonderful miracles. (Verse 43)
  3. During this time the early church was successful and growing in numbers because they were sharing all of themselves with each other and those in need.  They were sharing their time (eating meals together [Verse 46]) and their possessions (Verse 45).
  4. During this time the early church was successful and growing in numbers because they were united; they were of “one mind”. (Verse 46)
  5. During this time the early church was successful and growing in numbers because when they gave of themselves it was with gladness and sincerity of heart.  When they gathered together they brought with them a positive attitude, rather than being grumpy, disjointed people. (Verse 46)
  6. During this time the early church was successful and growing in numbers because day by day they were praising God. (Verse 47)

Do you think today’s church struggles with these six things (any or all)?  If so, if today’s church worked on these things and put more effort into unity, selflessness, and praise of God’s awesome nature and works, do you think that we would be more successful in drawing more people to Him?
