In His Power He Chose to Use Measly Me

Ephesians 1:18-23 reads,

18I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might 20 which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

When I read these verses I cannot help but question why a God with surpassing greatness, as these verses say, would choose to love us measly little humans and use us to turn more people to Him.  And even more than that, would become one of us in order to save us from our sin.  John 1:18 teaches, “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”  When He chose to become human it was sort of similar to if you chose to give up your power to become a tiny, helpless flea – except millions times worse.  He chose to limit Himself and become human so that we could share in the riches and hope of the inheritance of the saints.

Even in His limitless power, God chooses to use us to share the good news of Christ.  1 Timothy 1:12-14 tells us that even though we are broken and sinners He still can, and wants, to use us, and because of His mercy we can be His servants.  It reads,

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service, 13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; 14 and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus.

Isn’t it awesome that even with your shortcomings that God can use you to make a difference in someone’s life?  And what is even more awesome than that is that you are not alone in this work.  More can be accomplished if we work together as a team – His Body – to share the news of God’s love and power.

Romans 12:4-8 says,

4 For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; 7 if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

If we work together as the Body of Christ, with God’s power and guidance, the outcome is limitless.  We need to work together to reach the ultimate goal of bringing more people to Christ so that they too can see the hope of our inheritance.
